Shino Sakuragi 桜木紫乃

Shino Sakuragi (1965–)  was born in the eastern Hokkaido city of Kushiro. She decided to become a writer at the age of 14, when she read the novel Banka (Elegy), written by local author Yasuko Harada and set in Kushiro; but it wasn’t until after she was married and had started a family that she seriously turned to writing fiction. Her first major notice came with the short story Yukimushi (Snow Bugs), which received the 2002 All Yomimono Prize for New Writers. Her first book, the 2007 collection Hyōheisen (Frozen Horizon), earned solid reviews; she has published regularly ever since, garnering attention as an author of stories set in Hokkaido. She received the Shimase Award for Love Stories and was nominated for the Naoki Prize for her 2011 novel Raburesu (Loveless). In 2013 she won the Naoki Prize for the linked story collection Hoteru Rōyaru (Hotel Royal); the title came from the name of a hotel operated by her own parents. Among her other works are the story collection Tāminaru (Terminals), which was adapted to the big screen, and the novels Fūsō (Sky Burial), Tōgen (Tundra), Garasu no ashi (Reeds of Glass), Muku no ryōiki (Area of Innocence), and Uraru (Mist).
