Booksellers Award

This award got its start in April 2004 under the banner "Nationwide Booksellers' Most Recommended Books." Booksellers and bookstore staff from around the country nominate and vote on books they particularly enjoyed reading and want to recommend to other bibliophiles. Full details of the unusual two-stage voting process each year are open to the public. In the first stage, each participant nominates three titles for consideration, ranking them with points, and the results are compiled to arrive at an official list of ten nominees. Only those who read all ten nominated books are permitted to vote in the second stage, with the voters once again assigning points to their top three choices. The results are compiled to rank the ten books, with the top-scoring title receiving the prize. As a point of reference, 439 participants from 351 bookstores took part in the second round of voting in 2011. The award has become famous for the dramatic boost in sales enjoyed by the winning work after the results are announced.
