The company publishes approximately 300 new titles each year, from management classics to the latest theories, and from how-to books immediately applicable to the workplace to self-help titles aimed at long-term personal improvement. The company came into being when the economics magazine Daiyamondo (Diamond) was first launched. In the inaugural issue, founder Kenkichi Ishiyama declared, "The guiding principle of the magazine will be the abacus. It will be by the abacus that the magazine determines what is good and right, and what is not. Nothing will stand apart from the abacus." The abacus symbolizes numbers, which is to say, the facts. Throughout its 100-year history, Diamond Inc.'s prime objective has steadfastly remained to provide readers with information that is precise and accurate?like the abacus cited by founder Ishiyama?and that has direct applicability to their lives.

Hosei University Press’s prolific publication of translations and general-interest books in the years after its 1948 founding made it a crucial provider of university extension services amid the “postwar enlightenment” movement to promote democracy and modernization in Japan following World War II. By its 60th anniversary in 2008, the press had produced some 2,500 titles. From academic studies and textbooks to works for a general audience, its broad range of publications in the humanities and social sciences represents an excellent balance between original scholarship and translations of overseas sources. While arguably best known for the long-running Universitas series of translated works, primarily in philosophy and thought, the press has also garnered acclaim for two more recent series: Sapientia, a collection of inquiries into contemporary society begun in 2008, and Mizu to “machi” no monogatari (Of Water and Cities), issued since 2009.

In addition, the company publishes occasional supplements to the journal focused on individual topics under the Bessatsu Kagaku (Additional Volume of Chemistry) imprint, as well as a now-extensive backlist of books ranging across the full spectrum of scientific disciplines. Since its launch in 1945, Kobunsha has established itself as a leading publisher in Japan. Among our various publications, Kappa Books, an educational library of nonfiction books first published in 1954, has won broad support from the public. Kappa Novels, a library that has produced a number of groundbreaking bestsellers, such as Points and Lines by Seicho Matsumoto and Japan Sinks by Sakyo Komatsu, is recognized as one of Japan’s outstanding imprints. With an aim towards promoting mystery novels, we established the Kobun Foundation in 1994, which has produced many talented writers as well as awarding a Grand Prize for Best Mystery Novels annually.

As for magazines, we have brought out Josei Jishin (Women’s Self), the earliest weekly magazine to focus on the improving status of women in Japan. We also launched JJ, a monthly Japan-centered fashion magazine for women that does not imitate Western culture. Kobunsha has also been a pioneer in new markets, producing magazines such as CLASSY., VERY, STORY, and HERS, which emphasize the viewpoints of readers.

In February 2009 we launched our Subsidiary Rights Division (renamed the Contents Business Division in 2013) to further expand our copyright business in regions of Asia such as China and South Korea, as well as Western countries. We have an agreement with Chinese publishers to export magazines such as CLASSY., STORY, and Gainer. We are also working in the content business, including film adaptations.

Maruzen Publishing Co. was founded in February 2011 when parent firm Maruzen Co. spun off its publishing division as an independent corporation. The parent company’s publishing activities can be traced back to 1872, when it brought out Shinyaku seiko (Properties of New Medicines) under the Maruya Shuppan imprint. Some of its other early milestones as a pioneer in the dissemination of new knowledge during the period of “civilization and enlightenment” that followed the Meiji Restoration of 1868 were Kagaku nikki (Chemistry Journal; 1877), Butsuri nikki (Physics Journal; 1878), Shintai shisho (New Poetry; 1882), and Manabi no tomoshibi (The Lantern of Learning; 1897?).

Today, Maruzen continues to contribute to the advancement of science and technology by publishing a broad range of references, technical books, university textbooks, and web content in the medical and pharmaceutical fields as well as in other scientific and technical areas. In addition, it produces numerous video products spanning such diverse subjects as nursing, eldercare, social welfare, medical services, insurance, physical fitness, the arts, psychology, and business management, and also serves as the distributor for BBC and University of the Air publications.

Medical View Co. is a publisher of a wide spectrum of medical books. The company seeks to contribute to the medical and health industries by delivering accurate, high-quality medical information in a timely manner under the editorial watchwords of “foresight,” “originality,” and “reliability.”

In an era of breathtaking medical progress, the latest research in such fields as gene diagnosis, gene therapy, and regenerative medicine is bringing one change after another to clinical practice. Similarly, the rapid aging of society has brought dramatic changes to geriatric medicine and eldercare. In response to these trends, Medical View strives to provide readers with information that is comprehensive, to the point, and presented in an easy-to-understand form. To this end, the company gives particular attention to incorporating ample illustrations, photos, tables, and diagrams into its publications?not only in its traditional paper-based books and magazines, but also in its growing list of digital publications (CD-ROMs, DVDs, ebooks, apps).
