User Guide

  1. Japanese names appear in Western order: given name, then surname.
  2. Titles with a JLPP symbol next to them are works selected by the Japanese Literature Publishing Project (JLPP). Languages indicated to the right of the symbol are those into which the work has been fully translated but not yet published. To inquire about publishing these translations, please contact us.
  3. If a work has already been published in English, the title used here is the published English title.
  4. The original Japanese title appears in romanized form below the English title.
  5. If a work cited in a synopsis or author profile has not yet been published in English, the romanized Japanese title is given first in italics, followed by a tentative English translation of the title in parentheses.
  6. Works are listed with the publication year of the first edition and the name of the current publisher. However, author profiles from the Contemporary Japanese Writers series list works with the publisher of the first edition.
  7. The Modified Hepburn system of romanization is used for Japanese words. Long vowels are indicated by macrons, with the following exceptions:
    • Names of authors, publishers, universities, and other entities who romanize their official names without macrons.
    • Place names that appear in English dictionaries without macrons, such as Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Honshu, Kyushu, Hokkaido.
    • Japanese addresses, for example those of publishers.

Japanese names appear in Western order: given name, then surname.
