Synopsis

Ma is crazy about washing, and she washes not just the clothes but the children, a cat and dog and hen, shoes and sausage, and whatever else she can get her hands on. When a lightning bolt in the sky sees them all hanging on the clothesline, FLASH! BOOM!, it comes crashing down out of the clouds for a closer look, and Ma promptly washes it as well. The children see the lightning bolt all wrinkly and wrung out, and decide to draw it a face with their crayons. Pleased with its handsome new face, the lightning bolt returns to the clouds, but then the next day, the other lightning bolts who are envious of its good looks come crashing down to earth one after the other to get new faces for themselves . . . The encounters between ball-of-fire Ma and the humorous lightning bolts make for a belly-shaking read, drawing readers on in the midst of their laughter.

With this work as her springboard, author Wakiko Sato went on to create her Grandma Baba series, featuring a granny with prodigious stores of energy as well as marvelous powers. Kumori nochi hare sentaku kachan (Washing-Crazy Ma Flies the Big Kite), a sequel to the featured work, has been translated into Korean. (Etsuko Nozaka)
