Synopsis

Amigurumi refers to small stuffed animals, dolls, and other objects that have been hand-knitted or crocheted, and author Mitsuki Hoshi maintains in this how-to book that there is nothing that can't be turned into one. Her highly expressive designs charm even grown-ups, who wear her creations as broaches or fix them to their key chains.

Although her knit dogs are less than two inches in size, each reflects the colors and distinctive characteristics of its species so clearly that one immediately recognizes a pug, a Japanese shiba, a Dalmatian, etc. Change the color and adjust the shape of the ears, and the creature becomes a rabbit or a panda instead?or even a parakeet, a ladybug, or a turtle.

The finished amigurumi are displayed in 30 full-color pages. An instructional section discusses yarns, needles, glue, the embroidery threads used to create mouths and noses, and other basic items for your toolkit; subsequent pages show general techniques for knitting/crocheting the basic parts?the head, body, legs, tail, ears, and mouth?with photos and explanations for each. The latter half of the section offers detailed instructions for each of the featured projects in the book, listing the particular materials and tools needed, showing how to create the various parts as well as how to put them together, and noting points that require special attention.
