This picture book for the youngest of readers has maintained its high popularity throughout the 45 years since it was first published. In 2012 it became the first Japanese picture book to sell five million copies.

The tale opens with a kitty holding its paws over its face saying, "Nobody here, nobody here . . ." On the overleaf the cat has lowered its paws and says, "Boo!" Turning the page, a Teddy Bear appears with its face covered, and the pattern is repeated. Next come a mouse and a fox, each time first with its face covered, then uncovered with a "Boo!" The simple repetition offers the kind of primal enjoyment that only a picture book can give. Last to appear is a human baby. Replace the baby's name with the name of the child reading the book with you, and he or she will giggle with delight.

This classic work enjoys wide recognition as the perfect first book for baby, and will no doubt continue to be treasured for many years to come. (Akira Nogami)
