Synopsis

Forty-six-year-old Shin'ya Ryuzaki, an elite University of Tokyo-educated police bureaucrat, is bumped down to chief of Tokyo's Omori police station after his son is caught doing drugs. But no sooner does Ryuzaki assume his post than a gun-wielding criminal barricades himself in a neighborhood building with a husband and wife as hostages. First to arrive at the scene is the Criminal Investigations Department squad assigned to handle such cases, followed by Special Assault Team (SAT) troopers. As the officer in charge, Ryuzaki first has the investigative squad attempt negotiations with the suspect, who refuses to even answer the phone. Three hours after the first gunshot, Ryuzaki, going against the admonitions of Investigations Department chief Shuntaro Itami (a friend since childhood), sends in the SAT. The troopers successfully rescue the hostages but kill the suspect?whose gun, however, is discovered on later examination to be empty. The media attack the police for shooting an unarmed man, while the chief inspection officer launches an inquiry, again putting Ryuzaki's career on the line. In the midst all this his wife, Saeko, is hospitalized for a stress-induced stomach ulcer, leaving housework-challenged Ryuzaki stymied in his private life as well. The figure of Ryuzaki?treated as an eccentric by those around him for his adherence to reason and principle and his utter disdain for waste and emotional considerations?lends a special appeal to this unconventional police novel, which also offers plenty of intriguing puzzle-solving.
