Containing three case files, this is the first volume in a popular series of mysteries featuring Yakumo Saitō, a student detective with the power to see dead spirits.
In “File I: The Sealed Room,” the reader learns that Yakumo was born with one red eye, and was almost killed by his mother because of it. When questioned by a policeman on patrol, his mother fled and disappeared, leaving Yakumo behind to be raised by his uncle. Now in college, Yakumo makes a habit of spending the night in the room used by the Film Studies Club and rarely goes home. One day, having heard a rumor that Yakumo is able to communicate with spirits, fellow student Haruka Ozawa comes to seek him out. She hopes he can tell her what’s wrong with her friend Miki, who has been in the hospital with an unexplained fever ever since she joined in a dare to enter an old abandoned campus building. Yakumo’s lukewarm reception at first puts her off, but she begins to place more confidence in him after he tells her that her twin sister, whose accidental death at a young age has always weighed on Haruka’s conscience, has been looking out for her from the spirit world. Together, they set about investigating the mystery of the deserted building. Visiting Miki in her hospital room, Yakumo sees that she is possessed by the spirit of another young woman. Subsequently, he and Haruka are attacked by someone when they sneak into the building in question, which convinces Yakumo that the case involves criminal activity in addition to a possession. Police detective Kazutoshi Gotō, who knows of Yakumo’s abilities and respects them, soon joins their team and the investigation continues. They eventually learn that the identity of the spirit that possesses Miki is fellow student Yuri Shinohara, who has been on long-term leave from school. She was in fact murdered as the result of an illicit-affair-gone-bad with an instructor named Takaoka, and her body had been abandoned in the basement of the deserted building.
In “File II: Dark Tunnel,” Haruka is riding in a friend’s car when she sees a woman covered in blood standing at one end of a tunnel known for its frequent accidents. In “File III: A Message from the Dead,” Haruka is getting ready for bed one night when she hears the voice of a high-school friend saying, “Run!” The ensuing investigation ultimately leads to two separate murders.
