A Dark Night's Passing is one of the great classics of modern Japanese literature. Kensaku Tokito is the product of an illicit union between his mother and paternal grandfather. Raised by this grandfather after his mother's death, he grows to have secret feelings for Oei, his grandfather's mistress. As a young man he attempts to wed Oei, at which time he learns the secret of his birth. Although devastated by this knowledge, Kensaku finally finds love with a woman named Naoko, whom he marries, only to discover that she and a cousin have slept together in his absence. No matter how hard he struggles, Kensaku cannot bring himself to completely forgive Naoko for this agonizing betrayal. Seeking escape, he retreats to the mountain of Daisen, where a strange and wonderful experience of feeling at one with nature leads him to redemption at last.
