This story of a woman who loves her men to obsession struck a chord especially with female readers. The mysterious narrator, Miu Minazuki, recalls her love affair of more than ten years before, when she was 32. Divorced two years, she was working at a bento shop while trying to establish herself as a translator of romance fiction. One day the famous author Itsui, who lives in a palatial house nearby, comes into the shop. Minazuki is a fan and ends up visiting him at his house. Before he even knows her name, he has taken her out for sushi, slept with her, and persuaded her to come work for him as his assistant/driver/lover. Minazuki learns she is competing for Itsui's attentions with three other women?his second wife, who is Minazuki's own age; a teenage model; and a middle-aged woman who once attempted suicide when Itsui tried to break up with her. She plots to draw him away from the others so she can have him all to herself, and appears to have succeeded, when Itsui's daughter by his first wife, the 19-year-old Nana, returns from abroad. Itsui asks Minazuki to look after Nana, but then begins ignoring Minazuki. She responds by locking Nana up in their home. It comes out that Minazuki spent two and a half years in prison for stalking and harassing the woman she suspected of being her ex-husband's lover . . .
