In 1923 best-selling author Kan Kikuchi founded the magazine Bungeishunju, laying the cornerstone for the present-day Bungeishunju Ltd. The firm will celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2013. With the monthly Bungeishunju as its flagship publication, Bungeishunju Ltd. is one of Japan's leading publishers, producing a wide range of magazines while its book-publishing arm issues approximately 400 fiction and nonfiction titles every year. As the supervisor of Japan's two most prestigious literary awards, the Akutagawa and Naoki Prizes, Bungeishunju Ltd. has introduced many new authors to the public. Virtually all of the prizewinners continue to play active literary roles in the evolution and growth of modern Japanese literature.
