    Founded in 1940, Chikuma Shobo Ltd. has a tremendously varied backlist that spans literature and the humanities, the social and natural sciences, and the fine arts, as well as numerous subjects of practical everyday interest. In addition to publishing individual books in these categories, the company’s imprints include several compact paperback libraries: Chikuma bunko (Chikuma Library), which reprints works ranging from classical literature to contemporary subcultures; Chikuma gakugei bunko (Chikuma Academic Library), which centers on works of philosophy and intellectual history; and Chikuma gakugei bunko Math & Science (Chikuma Academic Library Math & Science), which has made many basic works in the sciences accessible to the general reader. Other softcover imprints include Chikuma shinsho (Chikuma New Paperbacks), which offers original works on timely topics of interest to today’s businessperson; Chikuma purima shinsho (Chikuma Primer Paperbacks), which provides a platform for the more experienced members of society to address themes they consider vital to the younger generation; and Chikuma sensho (Chikuma Select Library), which serves readers who wish to delve a little deeper into a wide variety of intellectual topics. Chikuma also publishes numerous major compendia and sets, such as the 100-volume Meiji bungaku zenshu (Compendium of Meiji Literature) and the 54-volume Sekai koten bungaku zenshu (Compendium of World Classics), as well as the collected works of individual authors, such as the 19-volume Shinkobon Miyazawa Kenji zenshu (The Complete Works of Kenji Miyazawa, Newly Emended Edition) and the 13-volume Dazai Osamu zenshu (The Complete Works of Osamu Dazai). On other fronts, the company publishes textbooks for high-school Japanese classes, and together with the city of Mitaka it co-sponsors the Dazai Osamu Prize, an award given to new writers. In any given year, Chikuma brings out about 350 new titles, some 20 of which are typically translated from other languages, an indication of the company’s strong interest in making foreign works available to Japanese readers.
