The year 1969 saw the birth of Doraemon, one of Japan's most famous cartoon characters, to be followed by others such as Pokemon, Hamtaro, InuYasha, and Detective Conan. Shogakukan has also achieved success with its fashion and lifestyle magazines, including CanCam, Oggi, and BE-PAL. Currently publishing 17 different manga magazines, Shogakukan sells some 120 million copies every year in this category alone. As the publisher of numerous non-manga magazines and books as well, it is one of Japan's most prominent general publishing houses today.
