Rironsha was born in 1947, shortly after the end of World War II, out of a desire to plant new seeds for the future in the ravaged earth of war-torn Japan. The seeds soon sprouted and blossomed into a garden of children's literature, which has nurtured the minds of many new generations of boys and girls in the years since.

As the 20th century wound down, the cold war between East and West came to an end, but now in the 21st century, Japan and the world have entered an era of great change. The catastrophic earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011, has had the effect of calling into question our way of life, our values, and even our entire understanding of human civilization.

In a direct reflection of these developments, our children's world is undergoing great changes as well. Living in an age of upheaval, children more than ever need that one special book through which they can experience the joy of life. It is from books that convey the wisdom and truths that people live by in fun and stimulating ways that they are most likely to gain this joy.

The new Rironsha will carry on the fine traditions of the old in continuing to bring out such books, always looking to the future and to the world.

Sogensha traces its origins to a small Osaka bookshop opened in 1892 by Sotojiro Yabe and his wife Tomi. “Good books that last” has been the company’s motto from the outset, and over the years it has amassed a highly respected backlist that includes titles on history, religion and philosophy, culture, psychology, business, science and health, literature and literary criticism, language, reference, and other general interest categories.

Although the publishing world has entered an era of disruptive changes that might be compared in degree to those following the introduction of the printing press in the 15th century, one thing that will never change is the use of the written word as a means of sharing ideas and information across time and space. Sogensha will continue to make a broad range of intellectual properties accessible to readers in whatever form they demand?whether through the publication of traditional books and magazines, the creation of digital content, the sponsorship of seminars linked to company publications, or the development and sale of related merchandise.
